When should I start having mammograms?

You are entitled to free mammogram screening from the age of 40 years old. If you are 40 now you can ask your GP for a referral for your free screening. Once you turn 50 you will automatically be prompted to have a mammogram every two years which in my opinion is too long. I believe mammorgrams should be annual. However if at any age you perceive a change, a lump, a pain or a general unease about your breasts don’t hesitate - get tested.

If I get diagnosed with Breast Cancer what happens next?

If you get diagnosed with Breast Cancer you can rest assured you will be really well looked after. Rely heavily on your breast care nurse team - they hold all the information you need. Ask lots of questions - and don’t accept a situation with treatment until you understand it yourself. The best thing you can do when you get diagnosed is to tell everybody. That is the hardest part but it is the most helpful. The Cancer Council has great resources but your local Cancer Care Foundation will have lots of services available too. You are entitled to all sort of help from house work, gardening, transport, fuel subsidies etc etc So make sure you find out - every little bit helps.
